DMV to Issue Driver’s Licenses to Undocumented Drivers

DMV to Issue Driver’s Licenses to Undocumented Drivers

AB 60, passed in 2013, requires the DMV to issue a driver’s license to a person who is unable to submit satisfactory proof that the applicant’s presence in the US is lawful if the driver is otherwise qualified. The applicant will still have to provide proof of identity and California residency though. The bill mandates this change on January 1, 2015, or at some time sooner, at DMV’s discretion. The bill does not authorize undocumented individuals to obtain commercial driver’s licenses.
