Immigrant Victims of Crime
For a victim of a crime to be provided services, they often have to present verification that they in fact have been victimized. A police report is the most common way to provide the needed documentation. Yet, in the past, immigrants have been unable to obtain these reports. This is because they could not verify identity to the issuing police department.
Starting in 2014, victims cannot be asked to provide proof of lawful residence to obtain these documents. (Government Code Section 6254.30.) Any state or local agency that requires identification for release of police reports must accept various identification types regardless of whether it is domestic or foreign.
